Title:
Flowers blooming at Mughal Garden, Rashtrapati Bhavan
Description
During Feburary to March every year, the Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan are opened to public and become a popular visiting spot for Dilliwallahs. The Mughal Gardens are spread over a sprawling area of 15 acres. They were designed by the architect Sir Edwin Luteyn in a blend of Mughal and British architecture. The gardens were part of the larger British project to aesthetically demonstrate British domination over India. Adimittedly, the building and its colonial legacy was the object of displease by many of the early presidents of Independent India. Different presidents have since left a mark on the gardens. The now famous roses were planted by Zakhir Hussain (1967-1969). Other presidents such as KR Narayan and Pranab Mukherjee have tried to make the garden areas eco-friendly by installing rainwater harvesting systems, sewage treatment plants that recycle water for the gardening, vermi compost management and solar power.
